On Saturday May 31, after nearly a year of renovations, we opened the doors to the new Green Line on Locust, located right at the corner of 45th and Locust (4426 Locust Street). Green Line on Locust is the new incarnation of our former Other Green Line, now closed, that was located just down the street on the 4300 Block of Locust.

Our customers made the first days incredibly busy and special. It was amazing to see the big light-filled space and all the outdoor tables packed with energetic folks! We're looking forward to serving you more here. There are exciting things coming up in the Green Line future, too. In the next few months we will roll out a new sandwich and salad menu, improving the food offerings at all three of our locations. More than 285 professional visual artists in 16 neighborhoods will open their studios to the public to show and sell artwork. Studios east of Broad Street will be open the first weekend, studios while west of Broad will open the following.

For those planning their studio tours, Independents Coffee Cooperative shops are marked on the studio maps in POST's Artist Directory. Pick up your free copy of the POST Artist Directory now at the Green Line or any Independents Coffee Cooperative member shop.

The 2007 POSTCard is also available for sale, and gives citywide discounts through the month of October. Proceeds from the sale of the card support the event. Redeem your POSTcard at an Independents member shop and receive a free small coffee or tea with purchase. The Green LIne is also participating in the event by hosting exhibitions of neighborhood artists affiliated with POST. Visit our art page for more information.

"It's an easy choice to support Philly's great local art scene. Artists and creative people make our shops what they are, not to mention that most of the folks working in coffeehouses are artists, too," said Douglas Witmer, whose Green Line Cafe in West Philadelphia is a founding member of Independents Coffee Cooperative. Witmer, no surprise, is an artist, and has participated by opening his studio for past POST events.

"Part of the reason we exist is to be a place for creative thinking and conversation to take place. With Independents shops serving almost all the neighborhoods on the tour, we hope we can be a great pit stop for folks walking from studio to studio," he said.

Incorporated in 2005, Independents Coffee Cooperative is a group of independently owned coffeehouses focused on increasing the sale of fair-trade & organic coffee and educating consumers on fair-trade and sustainability issues, while making a positive impact in our communities, on the environment, and in the lives of the people who produce the products we sell.

More information about Philadelphia Open Studio Tours is available at:
<a href="http://www.philaopenstudios.com"target="_blank">www.philaopenstudios.com

Find your local Independent Coffee Cooperative member shop at:
<a href="http://www.independentscoffee.com"target="_blank">www.independentscoffee.com

Toussaint St. Negritude performs at Green Line | Powelton Village

 "Constructs in Aerolocomotion"
A solo performance by bass clarinetist/poet Toussaint St. Negritude
Saturday September 29, 7pm
($3 suggested donation)

If you've been by our Powelton Village location in the past two months, chances are you met Toussaint. Here at the Green Line, Peru is often on our mind, because that's where our wonderful house coffee, "Independents Peruvian Select," is grown.

The earthquake hit the coastal town of Pisco the hardest. Our coffee is grown far away, by the farmer-owned Cooperativa San Fernando, near Cusco, high in the Andes. While the folks in the San Fernando community did not experience the widespread destruction that happened in Pisco, reports from the country inform us that almost everyone is affected.

This fall you will have the chance to meet some of the farmers from Cooperativa San Fernado in Peru. The Green Line Cafe, along with our partners in <a href="http://www.independentscoffee.com"target="_blank">Independents Coffee Cooperative, are bringing the Peruvian farmers to Philly, so they can experience the global impact of their environmentally conscious coffee-growing.
