Songs on the Green Line & the Green Line On-line Store

Well, we're coming up on our fifth anniversary in January. We decided that was too long to wait, so we're gonna start celebrating a month early with a host of national and regional music talent, and make it a fundraiser while we're at it!

100% of the profits from the sale of Songs on the Green Line benefit Cooperativa San Fernando, a worker-owned coffee cooperative located high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, where the Green Line's house coffee is grown.

Produced in collaboration with Sherman Arts, the 13-song folk-rock compilation features songs by local and nationally known independent musicians: The Innocence Mission, Denison Witmer, Birdie Busch, Soltero, Red Heart the Ticker, Jack Ohly, The Corndawg, The Weeds, Fan of Friends, Devin Greenwood, Circles, Bird and the Buffalo, and Little Ocean. Cover art by West Philly's own John Overmyer. Trust us, you're gonna love this record!

Local Independent Coffee Fuels Local Independent Art

The Green Line Cafe and the Independents Coffee Cooperative have partnered with Philadelphia Open Studio Tours (POST) for their eighth annual citywide event October 20-21 and October 27-28. More than 285 professional visual artists in 16 neighborhoods will open their studios to the public to show and sell artwork. Studios east of Broad Street will be open the first weekend, studios while west of Broad will open the following.

For those planning their studio tours, Independents Coffee Cooperative shops are marked on the studio maps in POST's Artist Directory. Pick up your free copy of the POST Artist Directory now at the Green Line or any Independents Coffee Cooperative member shop.

The 2007 POSTCard is also available for sale, and gives citywide discounts through the month of October. Proceeds from the sale of the card support the event. Redeem your POSTcard at an Independents member shop and receive a free small coffee or tea with purchase. The Green LIne is also participating in the event by hosting exhibitions of neighborhood artists affiliated with POST. Visit our art page for more information.

"It's an easy choice to support Philly's great local art scene. Artists and creative people make our shops what they are, not to mention that most of the folks working in coffeehouses are artists, too," said Douglas Witmer, whose Green Line Cafe in West Philadelphia is a founding member of Independents Coffee Cooperative. Witmer, no surprise, is an artist, and has participated by opening his studio for past POST events.

"Part of the reason we exist is to be a place for creative thinking and conversation to take place. With Independents shops serving almost all the neighborhoods on the tour, we hope we can be a great pit stop for folks walking from studio to studio," he said.

Incorporated in 2005, Independents Coffee Cooperative is a group of independently owned coffeehouses focused on increasing the sale of fair-trade & organic coffee and educating consumers on fair-trade and sustainability issues, while making a positive impact in our communities, on the environment, and in the lives of the people who produce the products we sell.
